Isn't it amazing that what happened as an exchange of ideas via email is finally taking shape? I'm looking forward to reading the book together and watching the films. 🤗

I love coming here after waking up to see a whole conversation between you and Alexander in the comments 😅

Isn't this amazing? Generating content while you're asleep. Best automation ever!

I am on my second watch and now am getting obsessed with watching while reading, I need all the Spice... 😂

Expand full comment

That's a great idea. I need to try that.

Expand full comment

This is a good idea, watching while reading... I might do it as well and go, Denis Denis, you skipped one line!

Expand full comment

Tsk Tsk, Denis, Paul doesn't mention the baby until they are in the tent. But... you know, it works. Got to make tough choices! Adaptation.

We have gang up on him on Twitter and point out all the differences. 🤣

X you mean! He uses that? Pffff. We will use OUR VOICE on him: COME TO SUBSTACK. SUBSCRIBE! 😂

Expand full comment

And learn from the pros! 🤣

Expand full comment

I've always meant to read Dune so maybe this is the impetus I need. It sounds like a great collaboration. I remember it's being discussed, so I'm glad to see it coming to fruition

Expand full comment

Awesome, great to have you on board, Terry.

Expand full comment

My follow up to Vulpes will be unveiled to the world tomorrow

Expand full comment

Now that's gotten me excited! Can't wait.

Expand full comment

You will be disappointed 👀

Expand full comment

"I answered the door. No one was there. The end."

😅

I'm very certain I won't be, Terry :)

Expand full comment

😂😂😂 I wish I'd thought of that! It took me over an hour to write 500 words, actually more if I include thinking

Expand full comment

Thanks, Terry! Yes, join us! You must. No time like the present!

Expand full comment

Thanks, Alexander. I will do my best. It sounds exciting

Expand full comment

Excellent! And spread the word! If you will. :)

Expand full comment

O ye of little faith. It's already in my plan for tomorrow's Start the Week, should a miracle occur and I actually have to time to bash it out, I mean craft it.

Expand full comment

No rest for the wicked! Craft, my friend, craft! The Harkonnen never rest.

Expand full comment

I really liked the movie (also looking forward to the game). And until recenlty I didn't know I could read Fiction books at all. This got me interested to get the book (or books) 😁 It got added on my list to buy !

Expand full comment

That's awesome, Jezz. Is that game Dune: Awakening? I'd forgotten that was in development. I'm been tempted to give Spice Wars a go at some point, too.

Expand full comment

That is correct. Saw some early concept art last week that put it back on my map.

Expand full comment

Games? In the Dune Universe? Wow, how did I miss those??? Although I must enter with caution, I can get intensely hyper-focused on playing that my reading time gets eaten into.... a horrid thing to admit I know. Tee hee 😜

Expand full comment

Haha, well tread with caution indeed then ;)

The old old Dune games were some of the first games that tied in with a movie/book franchise I think.

Expand full comment

Oooh!! I DID have a copy. (I’ve never read it.) I wonder if it was gotten rid of when I downsized. When daylight comes, I’ll go have a peek in all my book stashes. Fingers crossed that it’s still around. I’d love to join you all. What fun!! (Can’t believe I haven’t yet watched the new film either. The shorts look SO rich and sumptuous.)

Expand full comment

Hope it's there, Beth! You're in for a real treat with the film. It's spectacular. Glad to have you with us.

Expand full comment

You will find it and the Spice will flow! Join us, Beth! :D

Expand full comment

I'm in. I've never read it but I've heard so much about it that this will be my motivation.

Expand full comment

I think you'll enjoy it, Jim. And if you don't, you can shout at us in the comments ;)

Expand full comment

Awesome, Jim! Glad you will be joining us! The Spice Must Flow!

Expand full comment

I’m so excited for this! That is all, I’ll go back to riding this sandstorm now… 😀

Expand full comment

Yay! I imagine that in the time it's taken for me to sleep and wake up and read this, you have now already read the first full book, given your reading speed ;)

Expand full comment

Hah, that estimate would not have been too far off if I hadn't decided to start Journey to the Center of the Earth beforehand. Soon!

Expand full comment

How I wish I could read at your speed 😆

Expand full comment

Excellent! Watch for worm signs! :) Glad to have you on board, Renee!

Expand full comment

Dance across that sand.

Expand full comment

without rhythm ;)

Expand full comment

Sandworm, not sandstorm. Darn autocorrect!

Expand full comment

Riding a sandstorm also sounds cool, though.

Is the conversation happening in one post that you each are contributing to, or will the conversation be spread among each of the 4 contributors?

Rereading is such a great way to create a relationship with the story!

Expand full comment

I should have mentioned that it will rotate through our respective stacks, and I imagine we'll cross-post each time.

Expand full comment

We are drafting in a shared document and having Zoom sessions to discuss. Each post will have all of our voices. Maybe we should do a podcast, too? 😅

Expand full comment

If there is a group read, count me in! Last time I read Dune was when I was very very young. 50 sounds like a good age to return to Arrakis!. I’d love to join in. 😋❤️ Fear is the mind killer....

Expand full comment

Lovely to have you join, Meg!

Great quote!

Expand full comment

Join us! I thought I might read live on my Discord but timezones are a bit prohibitive. Nonetheless, please come to Arrakis with us!

Expand full comment

Such a memorable line!

Expand full comment

Does this mean I have to read the screenplay, too? Denis! I ave no time Toulouse! 😅 It will be magnificent. But first, I need a Melange, of the Vienna kind.

Expand full comment

I need some melange myself. Currently (presently), a ground green form from just south of Kyoto.

Expand full comment

Can´t believe the whole support on this one. The community is huge and I love that! Really Fam, so blessed to be here. Thank you for creating a super nice space for ideas and feelings to flourish. Let´s keep writing better stories. Cheers.

Expand full comment

Aw, thanks Alex. I know, isn't it amazing! I was worried this might not be so popular here, but I'm left aglow by all the support :)

Expand full comment

Let´s make a big one mate! Btw, would love to have you hang out and be part of one "Letters To A Friend" Edition sometime soon, what´d you say? Hopes for the better Nathan! =)

Expand full comment

Sounds intriguing mate 😉 what would be involved?

Expand full comment

So exciting. I’ve got a few reads on my plate now 😅 but this is still on the list and I might dip in before reading. How crazy is that?

I think I’m on a plane to the US that day but will have plenty of time at my parents’ to catch up. Vanessa -- LOVE her comment. How hard core is that? Rereading something (that long) you don’t really like to prove a point and hangout with Substack friends.

Expand full comment

I know! Isn't this just a great recognition of the community that Substack has managed to foster. I didn't know ANY of you this time last year!

Amazing if you can join us Kate. And don't worry, I have multiple books on the go, too.

Expand full comment

Ok, I’m intrigued. I’ve read Dune about 15 years ago, in French, so reading it again in its original language could be interesting.

Expand full comment

That's cool, Remy. No pressure, but if you'd like to join in then would love your thoughts.

I'm finding myself being fairly critical on this reread, actually. I really like the story and world he's crafted, but Frank's prose and exposition ... not so much.

Expand full comment

I'm still a million years behind on everyone's Substacks, but this looks like fun! Can't wait to learn what you all think of Dune. I've tried to read the first book six times. I always get stuck in the desert. I'm sure that's a metaphor for something. 😅

Expand full comment

Hehe, I've heard a few say the same in that they get so far and then don't finish. I don't think it's for everyone. It's very much SciFi of a certain genre.

Expand full comment

I think if it were a Choose Your Own Adventure, I'd always get eaten by sandworms! 😄 But it'll still be nifty to see what everyone else thinks!!

Expand full comment

Sounds like a great idea. I've not read the book or seen the flick.

Expand full comment

Well worth it, if you feel like doing so Mary. My wife is generally not a SciFi fan at all, but she was completely taken by the film. (Probably helped that she has a thing for Timothée Chalamet 🤣.)

Expand full comment

I started reading the Dune books about 2 months ago.... and I...am...hooked!!

Thankfully I'm reading on kindle so I don't have to take the large books with me everywhere.

I read Dune, Dune Messiah, The Children of Dune as quickly as I could. I am currently reading The God Emperor of Dune.

Each book has been absolutely wonderful, page turners that keep me up at night.

Expand full comment

That's great to hear, Andee, and also really interesting. I've never actually read beyond Dune itself 😳

Will love to hear your thoughts on them all.

Expand full comment

I just finished The God Emperor of Dune (GEOD). I would say I enjoyed this one the least so far. Dune, Dune Messiah, and The Children of Dune had me hooked, but GEOD took me a little time to get through, I hypothesize likely due to a deep focus in philosophy that went above my head sometimes. I am going to take a break and read something contemporary before I read the next one (Heretics of Dune).

Hey Garrett, no worries at all. If you want to dip in to read what we have to say (and, to be honest, I've never done anything like this so am still scrambling to write down exactly what I think and question whether anyone would find my thoughts useful) then by all means just pop by, but totally understand. (For what it's worth, this reread has made me realise that I don't think Frank H is a very good writer. He has crafted an excellent world, but the writing leaves me cold.)

630 page manuscript! Wow. Amazing. Hope it's a good read ;)
